Stone Circles
There are almost 1000 stone circles in Britain, dating from 3,000 BC to 1,500 BC, the reasons for their construction being unknown. Cumbria has around 50, including a number of both the major and oldest ones. There is a wide range of types, from the vast monumental circles at Castlerigg, Swinside and Long Meg, to the standard early bronze age circles of about 100 ft in diameter as at Casterton and Elva Plain, to diminutive rings associated with alignments and burials. Some are associated with henge monuments such as Mayburgh.
