Dry Stone Walling
Dry stone is a method of building that doesn't involve any mortar to hold the stones in place. Walls, bridges and buildings have been constructed in this way since before the Roman era. While "Dry Stone" is best known for the construction of walls, this has expanded into buildings, land marks, bridges, and other structures.
Dry stone walls are often used in Cumbria to define land boundaries. While the average height is about 1.6 metres, they can be found in some farmland areas of the Lake District measuring just over 2 metres. Local stone has also been used to create water troughs, culverts and gate posts.
