Picture Library Image Information for Professional Buyers Most of the digital files in the library are produced on a 16.7 megapixel, full frame sensor digital camera which gives a 95MB file. Some images contributed by other photographers may be to a lower filesize.
For the library, the images are downsized from this master and converted to .tif files to typically give a 50MB RGB 16bit image which will print to A4 at 300dpi/ppi (other sizes are available). As is normal for professional images, they are provided unsharpened to allow for customised sharpening by the client. They are tagged with industry standard colour spaces, namely Adobe (1998) RGB for print use, or sRGB for web use. Other Options (below) describes alternative image specifications.
Images from film originals are produced to the same specification, and are scans produced on a Flextight scanner. This is a virtual drum scanner, giving excellent quality. More details regarding our scanning can be seen here. Other Options For a small extra charge we can also provide customised file configurations. Since most of our images are originated as 'raw' captures, there is considerable leeway for tonal and colour adjustment before converting to the library default .tif file. We can also use a sophisticated custom sharpening process to suit your exact image use, tag your image with a different colour space, provide virtually any file format, or even make tonal and color adjustments. With most images, you even have the option of other file sizes up to 95MB, which will give a full A3 or double page spread. Colour Management All our work is completely colour managed in-house by ourselves. This means that a spectrophotometer is used to measure and ‘profile’ the colour response of our monitors, printers and scanners, using the industry standard International Color Consortium (ICC) format, in order to keep equipment calibrated and enabling us to maintain the integrity of digital colour in our work.
This gives us precise control over the colour characteristics of the files we supply, and is an analytical tool for exploring colour problems. For example we can see scientifically what colours are in the image, which can be viewed on a particular monitor, what can be recorded by a particular scanner, printed by a printer, and which are clipped if any by a particular colour space. We also use a range of specialised colour spaces for different purposes. An example is the separation of saturation from tonal changes, giving a much greater degree of control in editing images both for print and reproduction. It also means we can advise clients about their own colour workflows, as well as other matters such as Photoshop's colour and screen proofing settings and digital asset management, usually without charge in the interests of making the most of our services!
We also provide an ICC Profiling service to clients. Please Contact us to discuss this.
